In today’s difficult economic climate, many Summit County residents need emergency services while on the road to self-sufficiency. Individuals and families find themselves lacking the most basic necessities. To assist in these situations, ASCA provides emergency services to low-income households, including assistance with food, clothing, household items, rent, utilities, optical and dental needs. People access these services at one of four outreach locations: West Akron, Barberton, Springfield/Lakemore, and the Job Center. Assistance with emergent needs allows families to remain focused on other issues, including employment and education.

Emergency services are made possible through direct funding (CSBG and Emergency Food & Shelter Program) and through leveraging and referrals to many local organizations and faith-based groups.

In addition to providing supportive services, staff actively advocate for neighborhood block clubs and associations, as well as educate the public on agency programs and available services.

The following emergency service programs are available to eligible low-income Summit County residents from Akron Summit Community Action, Inc.:

Food/ Nutrition: Supplemental nutrition assistance is available to households with inadequate income. Outreach sites in Springfield and Barberton offer food packages on-site, while Akron area customers receive referrals or food certificates.

Clothing: Families needing clothing for employment or school are referred to the Barberton on-site clothing room, or are referred to area clothing pantries.

Household Items/Furniture: Families needing household items or furniture are assisted through collaborations with other area organizations and faith-based groups.

Optical & Dental Assistance: Families without optical/dental insurance are provided an eye exam and a pair of glasses or dental exam and a filling or extraction.

Rent/Mortgage: Families experiencing a significant loss of income (i.e., job loss), or are homeless, may be eligible for a one-time rent/mortgage payment.
